Good evening again, Dave!
I forgot to mention another quote you inferred as below.
Dave Laird wrote to Frank Reichert...
It used to be when one read the Spokesman-Review, you nearly always could
predict what dribbled down onto the front page, since they nearly always
put the Cowles' agenda first, and the people's needs last. However, in the
last few days, given the explicit nature of the morning news, I might as
well have purchased one of those tabloid magazines they put in racks by
the checkout stand at the grocery chains. At the rate they're going,
pretty soon now the Cowles will realize there is BIG MONEY in selling
pornographic content on the front pages of the paper. That and a legendary
history of misleading and falsely telling stories would perhaps mean that
the Cowles will invent new stories about West the next time sales are
suffering.
I unintentionally forgot to comment on this a few moments ago in my previous reply.
As you know, it wasn't but only a few short weeks ago, when I received a back-to-back slam dunk from the Spokesman-Review, and I suggest given the rag's history in misquoting me, and producing 'special investigative reports' involving me and north Idaho politics, that I wasn't really all that much surprised.
But I will have to admit that I was taken aback somewhat by the severity of vitriol that the Coweles' family have applied against Jim West. I have to wonder too why nothing of this surfaced whatsoever during the time when Tom Grant was actively challenging West for the Mayor's spot in the last election? That still has me somewhat puzzled.
Tom Grant recently admitted that he had rumblings, not yet substantiated, that candidate West's moral behavior might be at least a serious campaign issue, but he chose not to pursue that and rather tried to run a clean-cut election campaign nevertheless, ignoring such early allegations that surfaced prior to all of this. This, coming from such a seasoned journalist as Tom Grant, is unusual, who might otherwise pursue such a story and unravel it to its final conclusion as he was known to do in such cases as the Wanatchee Sex Scandal.
However, the long history of the Spokesman-Preview's jaded coverage of political candidates, not in the favour of the Cowels' family, would certainly suggest that most certainly The Spokesman-Review had enough information at that time to at least 'suggest' that other issues of moral integrity might have surfaced, or might call into question West's integrity to represent the City of Spokane as its' Chief Executive.
Therefore, the timing of the paper's front-page revelations (three years later) is interesting, if not purposely suspect or timed to foment a political emergency for the purpose of promoting the Cowels' family's best political interests at this particular time.
I suspect anyway, one has to wonder where the direction of this is really going to go in the coming days and weeks ahead.
