We just put in a 114 and run z/OS on 2 LPARs and z/VM on 2 other LPARs with
several guests under the VMs
As a POC your approach will work but there are a few things to consider for the
long run.
1) Unless you are running your CPs at full throttle, Linux will do much better
on IFL engines which aren't kneecapped - we can't afford the 3rd party software
licenses on z/OS for full-bore CPs so we have a couple of IFLs for VM and the
Linux guests to run on ;
2) If you decide to go production with Linux, then you will end up with VM
since Linux gets more useful as you use it and you can't put enough LPARs on a
mainframe to satisfy the demand. Plus, it's much faster to spin up a guest than
to build a new LPAR, and less disruptive, too. Also, VM's resource management
capabilities far exceed those of Linux and you won't need to feed the
memory/swap beast too heavily as compared to bare-metal Linux(s).
3) Personnel-wise, we find that we have about 1 1/2 FTE involved in the care
and feeding of a total of 8 VM LPARs on 1 z114 and 1 z196 with a couple of
hundred Linux guests spread over them.

Subject: z/Linux and z/OS

Good morning all,

Hope this is the right place to ask this question. Please pardon the intrusion
if I should be posting this someplace else.

Our management is considering the acquisition of a new z114 "sandbox" system
primarily for testing new hardware (DASD and tape). They would also like to
conduct a z/Linux POC using the same machine. I know that z/Linux can run in
native mode on a System z processor but I wasn't sure about it running side by
side with z/OS. Can this be done using PR/SM and building separate LPARs on the
z114 for running z/Linux and z/OS together on the same machine? I know that the
most sensible solution would probably be to get a z/VM hypervisor and run z/OS
and z/Linux as guest operating systems under it. However, there's a lot of
resistance here to running yet another operating system such as z/VM.

Any comments, advice, etc.?
