In fact, it would be better to say that IBM no longer recommends against running production z/OS on z/VM, now letting business factors rather than technical issues govern the discussion. Prior to the z10 and z196, we would recommend against z/OS in production on z/VM as a matter of course. Now it's a different story; now we ask the questions that Ingo raised. There are customers who run z/OS in production on z/VM.
