I also highly recommend the EMP-20 as well.
I've been using it with dosemu running on a 486 with very few problems.
I haven't tried it on a faster machine.
In /etc/dosemu.conf I had to put:
$_ports = "fast range 0x3bc,0x3be"
which seems to do the trick.
It may take a little futzing to get it working,
though, but once you get it working it should just work. :)
I purchased one of the 04A/04B modules along with the EMP-20
and with that and the included ones I've been able to program
most of the things I've wanted to (including the PIC 16F84).
