It isn't the application that's complaining, 'NO CARRIER' comes from the
phone.  And CD should only go high AFTER an actual connection carrier has been
detected, or am I mixing things up now?

Anyway, a typical connection using the 8810 looks like this:

I send ">":s, the phone sends "<":s..

< CARRIER         <- This one shows up when the phone is dialling, sort of,
                     that is, quite soon after the ATD command is sent..
< CONNECT 9600    <- And this after modem handshake, good ol' way..
