Yeah I was thinking that the next one I build, when the need arises,
would be a microcontroller-based solution using the ATtiny or something
similar since it has a hardware IR modulator in it, and power it off a 
spare USB port.  Then you could just load everything onto the uc and
forego lirc altogether.  Serial ports are getting harder to find.
