For files, yes, but the file *system* is quite object oriented in its
design. You could easily imagine the file system being encapsulated in
abstract classes such as these:

    class Device { <--- substitute syntax of your choice
    public:
        pure virtual open(...);
        pure virtual close(...);
        pure virtual read(...);
        pure virtual write(...);
        pure virtual seek(...);
        pure virtual ioctl(...); // fixed in later O/S :-)
    }

    class Filesystem {
        pure virtual mount(...);
        pure virtual unmount(...);
        pure virtual check(...);
    }

The same for device drivers.

:  however, unix files
: are, for better or worse, not oriented objects.

This part is correct.

I think you will find that it is asking for a username rather than a
hostname.

The only user account created during installation is 'root' which is the
equivalent of 'Administrator'. This account will accept the password
you entered during installation. Don't forget passwords, usernames,
filenames etc are case sensitive.

If this dosen't work then you will have to work around it - but that is
another story. Don't re install - seek help.

The definition originated sometime after WWII

1st world - developed western world with more or less democratic goverments.
2nd world - soviet style socialists nations
3rd world - the rest: which included most of the "backward" nations
            for variable (PC or not) definition of "backward".

It will. You need to get the large drive package to update the
installation disketts. It's an easy download and a no brainer to fix.

Exactly, just like Microsoft knows Access97 has a horrid data destorying bug
in it and barely did anything in the begginning when it was discovered. I
lost a weeks worth of data because of it. Microsoft is just as unprofessional
as Linux.

Subject: pppd problems

I'm trying to configure pppd manually for my SuSE Linux.
So far, I've had to use the 'kppp' interface, and that's a bit
flaky.

My provider uses PAP authentication. I *thought* I had
everything set right. I was using the command

               pppd call <isp>

Here's my 'options' file:

# cat /etc/options
debug
modem
crtscts
+pap
user <username of course>

The <isp> script:

ttyS0 57600 crtscts
connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp/chat-isp'

And the 'chat-isp' file:

""      ""
"ost:"  "ppp"
"ogin:" "<username>"
"ssword:"       "<password>"
"~-^Uppp-~"

Everything *appears* to connect fine until.......well, those
of you who are experienced can try to decipher this, since
I'm at a *total* loss!

It keeps terminating, over and over.
I've never had any trouble using pppd on the old
Redhat versions, but SuSE is givin' me fits.

Does anyone have an idea or two as to what I might do
in order to get past that 'peer refused to authenticate'?

Note: When I take the "+pap" line out of /etc/ppp/options,
I can connect just fine...I'm even assigned an IP #>
However, I can't ping any address or connect to the outside world.

In short, I'm stuck!

I do not think that someone who cares about $40 difference
would buy an official version.

The prices for official versions are just prices for support
and printed manual. You do not have to buy them - this is
just a convenient option for busy people.

Subject: Oracle, PHP3, Apache 1.3.6 problems
Date: Tue, 01 Jun 1999 14:17:13 GMT

I've successfully installed PHP3 (mod_php3-3.0.8-1) on Redhat 6.0
w/Apache (1.3.6) . But when I try to use it with Oracle, I get an error
saying ORA_* functions are unsupported. When I tried installing the
tarball, I ran into problems with Apache but PHP3 seem to work ok.

PHP3 works fine by itself but does not talk to Oracle. Am I missing
something here? My guess is the Oracle functions are not getting
loaded. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

-Raj

Can't SUSE be downloaded over the NET? I believe that this is a
requirement of the GPL.

If you have an existing network, you can use RedHat 6.0's ftp/http/nfs
installation methods to install from the Internet using a single
floppy. From what I recall, though, this does not support a ppp
adapter.

If not, you might look at trinux, DLX, Doslinux, FloppyX, SmallLinux, or
any of a few others available that are small enough to fit on a few
floppies as a way to get started. Some of these have ppp support in
them and could - in theory - be used to do a full installation of
another distribution.

Over a 26.4 dialup (I hate my phone line), the full RedHat 6
installation took about 10 hours - be prepared to run it overnight.
