Yes, most of the problems I was talking about are inherent in Windows,
but some of them are inherent in the platform (Wintel, IBM PC (which it
is no longer even close to)). Many of the shortcomings come from
attempting to support compatibility with machines 10 to 20 years old (in
both hardware and software), the rest come from a lack of vision in the
Wintel industry.
(I will use Wintel from now on to describe a Windows/Intel platform.)

It can be set in /etc/inittab, there's a line saying:
id:5:initdefault:
where the 5 can be changed to 3 for normal use or 5 for graphical (the 2 most
common uses), but I don't think that was what the original poster's problem
was...I had the same problem and never found an answer on NG's, so I had to
copy all files in my home directory delete the user and readd (not a huge
problem in my case), which reset all the default icons and everything. Andy,
you might want to wait to take this step and see if you don't find a more
helpful answer, but this is there as a LAST resort--it will work.
Good luck,

One way of thinking of (X)Emacs is as a lisp interpreter. All of those
extensions (and much of the core functionality) is written in (emacs-)lisp.
Usually these files are given names *.el, and can be compiled into *.elc
files.

I choose 'less' as it's much more versatile than 'more'!!! You can search,
scroll forward and back, etc. Many useful things. You can invoke it:
less < filename (redirect file to stdout to less)
less filename (simple invocation)
command | less (pipe output stdout to less)
a useful alias for your .bashrc is (I call it) 'lsa'
edit your shell config file, ( #echo "$HOME" ),
and put in this line on its own line after the last alias blah= that you
see:
alias lsa='ls -lFa --color;pwd'
alias lsr='ls -lFa | less'
alias lsd='lsa | grep /'
lsa : shows all files in cur-dir with attribute symbols in long format
with colorization if available
lsr : shows all files in cur-dir, with attributes, in long format, using
'less' for scrolling back & forward; use 'q' to exit less at
anytime; colorization doesn't work with 'less' on my machine....
lsd : shows only directories, using grep to display only lines with '/',
which as a file attribute, indicates a directory
Less has many commands available: use just the key 'h' to invoke the help
screen, use 'q' to quit the help screen, or at any time to quit 'less'.
To see a record of past logins, if you have, I think, syslog running at
boot, look at the file /var/log/boot.log (#less /var/log/boot.log).

I don't understand your last sentence: what does "Wintel, IBM PC" mean in
this case? I can't see how *any* of the flaws are inherent in the
hardware (which is what "PC" describes in common parlance, certainly in
linux newsgroups): they're *all* in the Windows part of "Wintel", and its
predecessors.
Wintel != IBM PC.

When a shell starts up (from login or otherwise), it reads
one or more
configuration files. Global files are in /etc, and user
configurable
ones are in the users home directory and start with a
leading dot.
I.e. /etc/csh/cshrc and $HOME/.cshrc
Usually, the PATH in the /etc file is set as something like
PATH /path1 /path2 /path3 /path4
The PATH in the users file is usually set as something like
PATH $PATH /path5 /path6 /path7
Which says take the existing PATH, and append a few more to
it.
All you need to do is to edit your $HOME/.cshrc (or .login)
file and change the PATH variable to what you feel you need.
Typically, you want to search $HOME/bin and /usr/local/bin
before
the system binaries directories, but that is up to you. If
you are editing root's path, you DO NOT want the path to
contain
"." (here)!!! Root's path is typically very short, and may
likely
be limited to /bin /sbin /usr/bin /usr/local/sbin.
Gord.

Did you use dd to clear out the NONBLOCK error from realplayer,
or apply the rpopen patch for it? one or the other should work, as it
has on my box, and has been working without any problems, and I'm up to
2.2.12 and 2.3.17 with my kernel. only thing that it is now complaining
about, are the codecs for video, in which only G2 could solve (if Real
gets off their arses, and upgrades the libc they're using).

It consistently happens with 2 PCs, and I've replaced the cable on both
machines 2 or 3 times (each) in the past year. It happens with the hub
in my office, and when plugged into the building's switches via one of 3
ethernet jacks in my cubical, so I'm less inclined to think it's the
cable.

Yeah. Unless we got a bad spool of cable, I don't know. I'd suspect
the NIC if it were just one machine, but it happens with 2. As far as I
know, nobody else around here is having the same problems with theirs
(all Windoze machines), so I thought maybe something funky was going on
with the Linux drivers for these machines, but even that doesn't make
sense. Then again, my level of understanding doesn't go very far to
that end...

Whatever you do, don't use that kernel, which is known to be broken.
I've had network slowdown problems with several RedHat-patched kernels.
The recent 2.2.12-7 seems to be working OK so far, as did a
2.2.13-pre4 available from Mandrake. The Kernel Notes section
of the Linux Weekly News (http://www.lwn.net) says there's a
memory leak related to the inn daemon, but I don't have that
installed.

Folks,
We are running RedHat 6 with the 2.2.5-22 (SMP) in a file
server configuration. Ultra-SCSI disks and 3C905b network card.
In the past several weeks we have experienced to system "hangs", i.e.
no console response (not even ctl-alt-del), no net response, no
logging -- only recovered by a hard reset.
They seem to occur during periods of high network traffic. It is
of GREAT management concern -- anyone have any experience with this,
good solutions. We hate to try a random kernel upgrade -- have
been considering 2.2.11.
Best regards!

Have you tried feeding that crap into SpamCop (http://spamcop.net)?
Itīs usually quite effective in filtering out the _real_ spammer.

Try chrony, an ntp implimentation which also keeps track of your
hardware clock.

There is NO backup software, anywhere, that will properly back up a
partition containing a running operating system. If you want a good
backup, the subject partition must be dormant. Yes, for Linux this
implies you must have another Linux installation in another partition
which can be quite small from which you run tar, and which itself never
gets backed up (problems=reinstall).
Common sense, really.

I believe (don't flame me if I''m wrong) that, to disable active desktop
you right-click on the desktop, go to the Active Desktop item (first
one), click on View as Webpage (if checkmarked) and the "webtop" will be
disabled (and your background will disappear). At least, that's how it
worked on mine just now.

I took Koin=E9 Greek (the Greek the New Testament was written in) in
college, and, since it was the common language of the day, there are
dictionaries containing words in that language not found in the Bible. =
Paulos is, of course, Paul. K=F6d=F6n is my last name (Bell), in Koin=E9=
Greek. As the signature says, this is the name I sign any artwork or
writings (what little there is of either) with. Unfortunately, the
accents which should be over the "au" in Paulos, and the omicron in
K=F6d=F6n are not possible in ASCII.
