AFAIK MAPI is the API inside windows that specifies how to call DLLs to
send and receive email. MAPI does not go out of the computer.

The protocol between a MAPI dll and the exchange server is another
thing. I have heard that it's something like LDAP.

MAPI client is a mail client in windows that knows how to call MAPI
dll-s to send and receive e-mail.

I'm no MAPI expert either so I'm not sure this is 100% correct.
