Big Linux programs are actually a good memory test, at least better than
the CMOS-"test" which is'nt much more than a memory "counter".
As to the problem, I've experienced it too when adding memory into free
RAM slots. I toggled mem barrettes between slots, and I found out that
the slots which had been empty before were defective. So for me, it was
a mechanical motherboard issue...

Hopefully my answer combined with some others may help you narrow the
problem down...
