You cant edit LILO, LILO is an executable, what you can do is make an entry
in /etc/lilo.conf as follows;
message = /boot/boot_message.txt
Create a file called message = /boot/boot_message.txt and experiment.
Rerun lilo to add the message line, then you can edit /boot/boot_message.txt
as much as you like without rerunning lilo.
