Can you do simple things with /dev/hdl like... ?

   dd count=10  if=/dev/hdl of=/dev/null

It might help to see your device entry and other information, can you give us
the output of...

   ls -l  /dev/hdl
   cat /etc/mtab
   cat /proc/mdstat
   cat /etc/mdtab
   dd count=10 if=/dev/hdl of=/dev/null

This gives us an overall picture of what we are up against.
