Does this mean a 2.2 backport might ever make it into the official 2.2 tree?
As far as I can see (which isn't that far I admit) the only real reason for
the 2.2 backport is the PPC camp.  Unless linux vendors are now trying to
support USB on x86 hardware now.  The PPC camp is still using an old backport
anyways since 2.3 seems to be working well.  (Yes Randy, the problem with
OHCI and new PPCs seems to be fixed now).

And, there is of course backporting JE's devfs bit into the devfs 99.x series
as well, it should work happily. :)
