Andrew: It looks as if it's something deeper than just the pppd settings. Could you find out exactly what kind of modem is installed by using the scanmodem utility? http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz If that URL is not working because of the war, I have a pretty recent one.
