Hosting-review.com looks pretty sleazy to me. Their presentation just
makes me think they are interested making money though ads. I don't
think they really care about providing quality reviews about web
hosting providers. I'm not saying they are a scam.
I would recommend webhostingtalk. It seems to be a lot more reputable
forum. I've never heard of hosting-review.com. However WHT is frequently
referenced.
For 3.50/mo you are going to get what you pay for.
Yep. Presumably no shell access. Probably limited to one mysql database
(if they even come with mysql).
1page appears to be
based out of Vegas. i checked their address. Its just one of those
mailbox shops.
Fly by night it sounds like.
I'm not impressed by anything their web site offers.
Granted I'm pretty elitist when it comes to this stuff. I think think
hosts like DreamHost and The Planet are crap, but truth be told what
they offer will work for the needs of most.
Well both of those companies have several different plans. From shared
hosting to true dedicated servers.
The reason they can offer unlimited this and that is because hardly
anyone ever uses that much.
Exactly. Mass over subscription. One very large web hosting provider
stacks about 1400 static www sites on a single server.
In the rare chance they do they are
generally limited by the connection on the other end. Doesn't matter
if their webhost gives them unlimited storage because their home/work
ISP can only upload stuff so fast.
Exactly.
So my 2 cents. Get some feedback from friends and people you know.
That's going to be the best info you can get. If you really want the
cheapest thing you find then just pick one. There are thousands of
cheap west hosts out there. The experience you get form the one the
charges 3.50 vs one that charges 6.00 is going to be minimal, but both
will all have unlimited bandwidth, storage and crappy support.
Well said.
My advise. You can get a entry level linux VM from rackspacecloud for
$11/mo +bandwidth. Or you can get the exact same box from Slicehost
with 150GB of bandwidth for $20/month.
Slicehost is a good provider. There are many VPS providers out there. I
have used several of them depending on my needs. For example VPN
termination requires low latency to end users, WWW doesn't matter as
much. Now I host everything myself at the house (with all sorts of
redundancy etc). I don't trust any of the providers that claim they have
everything in place. I've seen too many failures from too many providers.
Now days I just utilize s3 (2 us zones and europe) for backups. Plus my
own local backups (1 drive on the system, one on site but not connected,
and a drive in a safety deposit box).
I have been evaluating cloudfrount to scale out my static content.
The big thing is if you want managed hosting or not. Do you need someone
to provide detailed support? Or do you just want a system with power and
packets?
