Yeah, basically what happened is I had asked a client I was trying to get rid of to move to Dreamhost so they could manage stuff themselves. I created a shell account with a password that I also used at a couple important places. Usually I wouldn't have done so but it was the first really secure password I typed and I never would have thought the next thing would have happened.
Anyway, they sent an email to the client with the username and password in clear text and after I had deleted the account he emailed me asking why he couldn't get in. I flipped out, and emailed Dreamhost and trashed them on twitter and all kinds of stuff. Never heard back. Luckily there would have been no way to just guess the username+password combination had someone gotten the password, but I was seriously bothered by it and had to change a bunch of passwords. This was one of those situations where you know better and because you are under pressure and a time crunch you do what is fastest. I should never have used an existing password for the account. This isn't a reason to avoid them entirely, but it can be a huge problem for me. The price and what they give you they are decent you just need to make sure you don't create any accounts under someone elses account since the passwords and usernames will get sent. If you aren't at a place where you have the time or experience to securely manage a VPS, Dreamhost is one of your better options. Their control panel is pretty good.
