+1 to what Chris said.  Ive used Dreamhost, Linode, and Slicehost.  Linode
is better than Slicehost was, as far as all the shared hosting companies
Dreamhost was the best.  Media Temple is supposed to be good from what I
heard from some people but I have personally never used them.

If you don't want to spend the money don't expect stellar anything.

You can also usually find deals to get a year of dreamhost fairly cheap.
 Otherwise just get a cheap VPS and run it yourself.  I've never had a good
experience with any company that wasn't a VPS provider.  Dreamhost was about
as close as it got to decent service, but a lot of shared hosting providers
are full of it telling you how awesome they are, and usually it is a small
setup that is over charging for what they are giving you.
