If you are going this far it is well worth the few extra hours to get to
Penobscot Bay and some of the finest cruising grounds anywhere.

Howdy, y'all,

We're departing in a few minutes (no internet!) from Fernandina Beach, FL,
to Portland, ME. We won't spend a great deal of time there, working our way
south to stay ahead of the cold, but would very much appreciate suggested
itineraries in that area and south...

Anchor out is our specialty, as we can't afford anything else! :{))

Stephen:

Everyone should have your problem! You are embarking on what is, arguably,
the finest cruising ground in the world. Rockland is a wonderful jumping
off point as the major Maine islands are just east of there. You have left
out one of the most important pieces of data: how much time do you have?
Also, do you want to anchor out or make a civilized port every few days?
Both are very possible and enjoyable. What will you be sailing?

I have cruised Maine for 35 years, and still do. If you give me an idea of
your timeline, I will suggest an itinerary for a first-time Maine cruise. I
will be spending the month of September cruising the Maine coast, so maybe
I'll see you there.
