Bob's right about the fog, although personally I've never been pinned down for a number of days - but it can happen. It has been so thick that I could not see the bow of the (38') boat from the wheel, however, although once it's anywhere near that dense this detail is pretty irrelevant. Even so, with radar and a gps - and some preplanning - you can move around fine. Many folks do, including the lobstermen, so there is traffic out there in almost all conditions.

You can get some relief from the fog by getting near land, e.g., Fox Island Thoroughfare, or up some of the rivers, but this may not be convenient for you. I suspect that the northern part of Penobscott Bay is less susceptible to fog, but certainly not immune.

Thick fog can indeed make it tricky to see and avoid the lobster pot buoys, particularly the ones with "toggles" on them that you find much more numerous east of North Haven/Vinelhaven.

In spite of all this stuff, you'll have a blast. Maine is the nicest cruising area I've ever experienced. Alas, the sailing season is a bit short. Hal

Thanks to all who gave suggestions. We are looking over the recommendations on the charts and cruising guides. I'll let you guys know what plan we come up with.

One question, what is the fog predominantly like? Pea soup, heavy haze? Does it burn off or hang around all day and night?

Alan's advice is very good. I live in Belfast and cruise the Penobscot- Castine is the spot, the marked anchorages there are pretty sweet as is the town.
