Oh, this is easy as long as you're serving something from their page. And
you've got a very heavy back end solution in place. There are various
very expensive but very cool packages on the market to do this, which will
also deal with all the nasty (read boring) report generation.
What you've got to be careful about doing is not doing what doubleclick
did. Tracking demographics is one thing. IIRC doubleclick gave actual
user details (email addresses, etc) to other sites.
As far as I'm concerned you're user 23452. I don't care who you are,
where you live. I'm just worried about making sure that people are able
to navigate my site okay, and that they can easily buy things.
It's a fine line, and the draw of the darkside is strong. But if you
cross that line then there's no coming back.
Of course, I'm probably preaching to the converted, but I just thought
it'd important to get out in the open the rules of engagement before we
start coding.
