I think that the second flame was simply him failing to understand one of
our in-jokes and over-reacting because of the abuse he'd been given by
others on the list.

I really think that lots of people overreacted here. What was wrong with
simply pointing out what the list is for and leaving it at that. Having a go
at him ensured that it was all going to get out of hand.
