Before asking you, i read the documentation and spent two days tying to 
do what you say. But my network adapter (3c509B-TPO) refused 
everything i tried. The led on the switch a the other end of the cable didn't 
even light : the network adapter is not activated by the floppy (i tried all the 
functions of rom-o-matic).
Finally I found a 3C905B-TX with a boot ROM socket, with no ROM in it. 
And it works : the led on the switch is on and the workstation searches for 
a DHCP server.
Could it be that the 3c509B-TPO , not having a socket, doesn't recognize 
instructions of boot ROM included in the boot floppy ?

All my workstations have these 509 adapters. Do i have to change them 
all ?

Thanks to all of you for answering me, i was a bit upset by this 
troublesome adapter.
