Rawrite to a floppy : boot 
asks "Boot from (L)ocal or (N)etwork"
reply N, and I get the same thing as above.

The documentation found on www.3com.com seems to say that among all 
the 3c509 (there are many sorts), the 3c509B-TPO is the only one whith 
no boot rom socket. Maybe you don't have this one particularly ?
