Check out the fl_teachertool app that was developed by Robert
Arkiletian and is used over on the k12ltsp list:

It does exactly what you are looking for and a lot more, especially
the latest beta version.  I use it extensively to monitor who is
logged in and send messages, remote helpdesk, etc.
