surely, it would be easy to adopt the regular GNU practice
by naming the new subdirectory  lynx2-8-3-d23  (latest),
with  lynx2-8-3-p1  &  -r1  (or simply  -1 ) for pre & release series.
it would make it easier to unpack new development versions
into separate subdirectories in the same general lynx-development directory.

probably, no-one has thought to change things before now.
can TD fix this easily?
