Hi Howard,

Try moving the current version of your iTunes preferences file to your Desktop or some other location. This is generally the file named "com.apple.iTunes.plist" that is located in the Library/Preferences folder and maybe a similarly named file under the LIbrary/Preferences/ ByHost folder for your user account. You can keep a copy in another location, like your Desktop, in case this file (or these files) are not the source of the problem so that you can copy or move them back. What sometimes happens is that a new version of iTunes introduces additional options, and the old version of your preference settings clashes with the new settings. If there is no existing .plist file in your Preferences folder, the system will just create a new one with all the default settings the next time you launch the app. While this may lose your previous settings, it will also, not have any potentially conflicting definitions. You can restore your preferences by copying the files back to these locations if they are not the source of your problems.

Close iTunes, then in Finder:
1. Command-Shift-H to go to your Home directory (e.g., /Users/howard)
2. Command-Shift-G to bring up the "Go to Folder" dialogue window
3. Type or paste in: "Library/Preferences" (without the quotation marks) and press Return 4. Locate your "com.apple.iTunes.plist" file and copy or move it to another location. Just make sure you delete any file with this name in your Preferences folder. You can also navigate to the "ByHosts" folder under your Library/Preferences folder and remove any files named "com.apple.iTunes.plist" that are in that location.

Restart iTunes and check whether the crashing behavior has stopped. These preference files are the most likely source I can think of for your problems. If you want to read up on more details, check the recent MacFixIt page for "Addressing Problems with iTunes Updates", February 2, 2010:

The quick summary is that they recommend you remove extraneous files in your iTunes library before updating. Apart from getting rid of extraneous plist files, and deleting the ones I listed above if your update has problems, they recommend disabling or moving any plugins (if you have them). You probably don't have any, but some people download these so that they can publish what they are currently listening to on Facebook or Twitter, or for other functions. The versions that you have may not be compatible with your new version of iTunes, and can cause your update to crash. The article lists the various plist files be name. Note that recent iTunes versions changed over from a "My Music" folder to a "My Media" folder, so depending on when you first installed iTunes your music may be in a folder named "My Music" or "My Media".

HTH

Cheers,

Esther

Some more details: I'm not talking about the store. When I select
"Music" under the sources list, then VO-right arrow over to the
playlist browser, it sometimes crashes right then. At other times I
can actually choose and artist or an album -- woohoo! -- before it
then crashes. I've rebooted. I've restarted VoiceOver. I've repaired
permissions. What's the next step, recycling the computer?
Seriously, I'm glad that others are not having this problem. This
isn't, at this moment, an unspeakable nightmare for me, as I updated
iTunes on just one of my three Macs, as a test, just in case it was
screwed up. As earlier "upgrades" have been. And what do you know, it
was -- for me at least. I have a Mac Mini that is a dedicated music
server, with my entire CD collection on an attached external drive.
I'm only thanking the Gods that I didn't upgrade iTunes on that
machine before testing it first on this one.
