It is for the message list pane. You have not enough room there to display
everything. Eliminating the friendly name could be a bad choice, especially
for the correspondents of those gmail users who choose random local names.
Most phishing is obvious enough that you can delete it without opening it. The
important thing is that /no extra action/ is performed by default when you open
the message to see the details.
