I see the change a bit like when browser javascript lost the feature to read files from the local file system. Or the change to stop a zillion popups when you access a dodgy website.
There are features in email clients which were created with good intention; those features are too open to misuse today.
On the subject of terminal email clients. In the UK, network operators are going to have to get their heads around PAWS. Network terminals for doing system admin are going to locked down. I suspect text based email clients will be making a come back.
