We’re left to conclude from this list that the PRC’s economic system is indistinguishable from that of the UAE, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and India. Also, that these seven countries - where the state collectively holds a majority of shares of their top listed companies - should be described as “state capitalist” as distinct from the older capitalisms in the US, Europe, and elsewhere where the state has a negligible or minority stake. On a more fundamental level, it raises the question of why we continue to agitate for state as opposed to private ownership of the financial, energy, real estate, pharmaceutical, and other industries, since public ownership does not in itself ensure the state represents the interests of the working class. All Marxists would agree that the state does not do so in six of the seven predominantly state-owned economies listed here, with opinion divided on China. Many would also argue that the state did not reflect the interests of the working class in the USSR and the PRC under Stalin and Mao, though opinion is also divided here. Certainly, according to Marx's and Engels' definition of a “workers’ state” - one in which the standing army and police have been replaced by a popular militia and officials are subject to election, recall and paid “workers’ wages” - none has ever appeared bearing any resemblance to the Paris Commune which they envisaged as representing the proletarian dictatorship in embryo. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
