The mentality of "proletarian-based organization" was disastrous for the
Communist Party of China in the early 1930s. Finally, at the Zunyi conference
in 1935, the great Leninists Mao Zedong and like-minded succeeded in
transforming the CPC into a party set on revolution step by step all the way to
communism. It was a Leninist party, and the party commanded the army, which was
of necessity composed mostly of peasants.

There was no other way in a vast country with a tiny working class, a country
with no crucial industry such as Petrograd and Moscow had.

Meanwhile, the Trotsky---s in China largely stayed in the cities.
