I recall from my readings (decades ago) that the source of disaster for China's proletarian organization came in the Shanghai Massacre of 1925, the result of the CCP following Stalin's command for them to accept the leadership of the bourgeois KMT's Chang Kai Shek - the author of that massacre. This policy denied the socialist nature of the coming Chinese Revolution but instead called for the two stage approach, the first stage being limited to the national bourgeoisie, with the working class taking state power only in the far off future socialist stage.
