Justin,
You'd think you would want your overflow to go back to the tank for the
reasons you've outlined but in reality this is very rarely done or
recommended and Zac could have posted the answer to why. Have a look at this
page for a good diagram about fitting an EFI fuel system to a non-efi
vehicle.

This page has some good reading about EFI, it's actually an installation
manual for the ADS EM-3D puter.
A good high flow low pressure pump will have little trouble to out flow the
hp pump so you're unlikely to strike problems in that area, even a 260C/280C
lp hf pump will out flow a Bosch VL turbo hp pump. The lp pumps in late
model Nissans, Mazda's & toys are very small and reliable units, the very
common Nippondenso 56-200 pump is prolly the pick of them for reliability
and will supply a surge pump enough fuel (3400 ccpm @ 2.8 psi) which is more
than enough for 500 hp. This pump is used in production RX7s and Toy EFI's
and aren't expensive from wreckers.
regards
Terry

Thanx Zac,
The engine is only a standard SR, how much fuel can it need? I am running a
vk v8 pump away from the surge rated at 2.2l/min more than enough to sustain
275kw. The SR wont need all this so fuel return will be huge and the surge
will be in continual overflow. This still means hot fuel.Yes Zac you are
right about the low psi pump. I must match the flow of the high psi pump. I
do worry about hot fuel in an engine that as stock will never(I think) be
able to drain the surge enough to drop temps. Or mabey it dont matter cause
the low psi pump is always keeping the surge in overflow and thus
circulating fresh fuel from the tank.
Thanx
Justin
