Handling has got a lot more to do with the rest of the suspension than just changing the rims. Did your friend have the car lowered at all? Maybe the spring rate was far too high for the dampers, I know changing rims can have an effect on the handling but it's only a small part of the entire equation.

I know when I had the 215/40/13's on the rear of my wagon, it gained speed quicker, and dropped speed when braking faster. Isn't that better in the long run. I also I have been in a 1600 with 16's and the thing was horrible in the handling department, the tyre profile was tiny, and when pushed, the tyre did not roll as lets say my 195/60/14's do and the thing drifted into corners, nice and fun in the dry, but in the wet NO THANKS!!
