The only thing preventing me from ordering a new Relay from Rusty and being done with it is the nagging feeling that this was a coincidental failure that occurred the same time as I completed the repairs to the DV's. I am always suspicious of coincidences. But I've looked at everything I have disturbed (twice or more) as well as all other possible problems & cannot see anything that might be a problem..

I think it *must* be the relay. Probably the timer. Too bad there's no *fixing* to the relays -

Someone can post the fats, but my memory is that the biodegradable harnesses were 93-96. Herr Doktor always said the diesels were immune to the biodegradable harness problems, but I believe they are just slower to degrade. Evidence on list from the last couple of years indicates that the Diesel harnesses are beginning to degrade, or the list is populated by nervous nellies. I tend to think the former, though the latter may be true in some cases.

It is the engine harness that goes first.

As for Larry's original post about the relay, IME, it is the relay, as indicated by your troubleshooting post.

Is it the engine compartment WH or the one for the whole car?

I was hoping this problem was more common in the later MBs - like mid 90s - now you indicate it the early 90s like my '91 300D!

Darn...

No clue for your application, but I finally figured out what the lamp out indicator was doing in the E300D. Since there is afterglow happening and there are no bulbs that have died, there is a short in the wiring that makes the bulb out indicator light up until the post glow is done.

I am not looking forward to replacing the biodegradable wiring harness

Hi Gang --
I've been driving the W-124 to try and understand when and why the pre-glow light is coming on once in a while. I drove about 1 mi. when it came on - I needed to turn so I hit the turn-signals and brakes and the light blinked and went out momentarily then came on again. It repeated this behavior - the light came on, I'd hit the brake a couple of times and the pre-glow light would go out, then come back on after a couple of seconds and after 20-30 seconds it went out and stayed out for a few minutes. It did this 2 or 3 times.

While the ignition switch is not new, I am leaning toward the GP Relay being bad - I have been reading the procedure and hopefully will test it soon. But I think I will replace the ign switch anyway.

I need help finding the WSM procedure dealing with the ign. switch - I have looked at all of the Gr 54 pdf's without seeing any dealing with R&R or testing the ignition switch.

Anyone know where it might be?

Thanks!
