The W116 didn't just add ball joints, the front suspension is
radically different that a W108, and the rear is the same design as
the W126 (although not identical, I don't think). Same as the W123
-- negative scrub radius with high kingpin angle, etc.
The styling was, well, 1970's, as expected -- they hit the road in
1972 after all.
Great cars except for the rust -- they were notorious even in Germany
for serious corrosion problems, probably due to the use of Russian
steel (the Germans were on strike and refused to make sheet metal for
most of the W116 run, I believe).
Big, fast, and gas hungry.
