speaking of all this, it has been a long time since I have looked at barebones systems etc. How do you know what to get as far as processor? They dont seem to refer to them in mhz or ghz anymore so I am not sure if what I am looking for is a fast processor or a slow one. Is AMD or Intel best these days? Last several I have done I have gone AMD. The rest of it I can figure out but I just dont have a clue how they are rating processors these days.

A bad power supply can do all of the things you have happening -- all it takes is a drop in voltage to the CPU to kill it, and the PS can drop off line, too. Had the same problem myself occasionally with my brother's computer.

You should also check the temperature of the CPU in the BIOS -- if it's hot while idling (as in running the BIOS setup), the capacitors on the MB are going bad and allowing AC signal into the CPU circuit. Causes all sorts of issues, and can do nasty things to your drives, too.
