I tend to agree with Curt here---if you don't want to roll your own, get a machine that was high-end in its day and give it a second life. (Kind of like buying a W126!) You don't need the latest CPU for most things. Within reason, memory and disk performance have a bigger impact than CPU speed on perceived speed to the end user.
