Having spent a fair amount of time since last November doing bench work on enterprise class HP notebooks, I can concur that the consumer stuff is sh*t. There is a distinct difference in the enterprise (business) grade product and the consumer. Much of the difference is not visible, i.e., it's under the hood. When you field strip one and compare it to a consumer model it's amazing how cheap the materials and construction are in comparison.
I'm not going to beat my Apple drum here, but Macs are far better constructed, and there is no difference between what I get as an enterprise customer and what you buy at the Apple store or online. Look on eBay for a used HP xw8200 or xw8400, those are real workstation class PCs, you should be able to find one cheap.
