Recently, my 3-4 yr old emachine motherboard went bad. Symptom was
"apparent" spontaneous sleep mode that required unplug before it would
restart. When I took off the case side and put a big fan blowing in room
air, the machine would run OK for many hours: thermal problem confirmed. I
found a "used" motherboard on the net ($80 delivered) and that was the fix.

But I got impatient during troubleshooting and bought a new cheap Dell dual
core for $350 which is VERY much faster. So the repaired emachine is now my
spare. The main downside was transitioning from the windows 2000 interface
to the Windows 7 interface (classic view helped). Also some old 16 bit
software won't run on the 64 bit W7. Otherwise, W7 looks like an
improvement even if this old dog had to learn some new tricks.

So, IMO you probably have a bad motherboard, fixable for about $100. On the
other hand, a new machine may be a better plan, particularly if it's your
main workstation. But first be sure your software will run on the new OS.
