There are "repair sleeves" available for quite a few cars to remedy the
seal groove wear phenomenon. Maybe something like that would work for
the gouges?

Factory prohibitions result from the stuff being applied to thick, and
the resultant lumps squeezed out of the mating surfaces, then finding
their way to other parts of the engine. Using a little to seal the
new front main seal to the engine casing should not cause any damage.
Again, "if applied properly."
RTV is prohibited from use, book specifically says to use only engine
oil to lubricate the seal prior to installing.

It would be a lot faster/easier to just take off the ridges and wipe
it with silicone form a gasket (RTV) before you put the new seal.
Used properly, the stuff can fix a lot of ills.
