A shotgun is clearly the most effective home defense weapon providing you
can get to it, the perp is not too close, and you don't need to move around
the house with it. Shotguns have more stopping power than any handgun.
Magazine extensions are available to add a couple more shot shells (although
it makes the gun a bit front-heavy). But I wouldn't depend on the pump
sound to do much. There is a great deal of sensory distortion in
high-adrenalin situations; many people don't remember hearing their own
shots.

On the other hand, pistols usually hold more rounds in the magazine and you
can store them securely (in a small pistol safe) in convenient locations in
your home.

The pump action of a shot gun remains one if the most feared sounds in
America.

Having said that, experiences perps and even menacing dogs know when you're
loading a clip. No shot is necessary. The just move on.
