I was really impressed by the writing skill and the math skills (calc
and precalc) of eighth graders of 90 years ago. Very good prose.
Folks with that education can easily learn computer skills and
anything else needed in today's world. Can you imagine where we
could be if eight graders knew cal and were wonderfully proficient
readers and writers and equivalent science? A HS degree would be
similar to todays' PhuD.
Of course, and eight grade grad of 90 or 100 years ago knew how to
work and most could do as much work as a man. They had been raised
with increasing levels of responsibility, and exposed to the
consequences of mistakes. Long before Dr. Spock and "modern"
parenting.

Ever read what was expected of an 8th grade graduate of the 1920s
in the US? Pretty much the same as a HS graduate of the 60s or
70s. And pretty much the same as a BS/BA of the 2000s.
All in all, it is quite pathetic what schools churn out these
days. Especially when you consider the pricetag of 20,000 to 40,000
per year per student.
