I run 195/70R14 Michelin Defenders on all my W123s, and all my other 14" cars for that matter. The original size is 175R14 on a 240D, which is much
taller than 175/70R14. 195 70 14 is quite close and fits well. Plus,
they're actually good tires. Not so many good choices in that size anymore.

Do you recall the original aspect ratio or rolling diameter?
The way I remember it, the euro sizing was taller than the typical US 78 ratio of those times.
I want to say 175R14 would translate to 175/83R14 or close to it.
But all I can state with total certainty is that 165R15 found on Beetles and Saabs was bigger than the 175/70R15 found on Saab EMS and Turbo.
