Because a bet is much better than losing everything they are into you 
for right now -- a company the size of Ford dropping dead will kill a 
couple of big banks and some investment firms.

It's a fairly good bet, too -- Ford's problems aren't insurmountable 
and the solutions are obvious, just not cheap.
