A Not for Profit is not under the control of the community, also it does not distribute wealth or property as a function of the community. Also, as some may not know, a Not for Profit *can* turn a profit. I know, I work for one, and boy do we make a profit! However, based on the IRS rules for a Not for Profit organization, we are not allowed to stick the money in the bank and sit on it forever. We may have a small to the plus at the end of each fiscal year, but we must show that we have used the money from our income for the better of the organization. What this means: every year we buy brand new computers from Compaq/HP. Go HP, you get money from us annually to build new computers and pay your people. We rotate systems around the company and roughly once every three to four years every computer in the company has cycled to new. (ie, my desktop is replaced every three to four years, it then moves to another point in the company, or to the warehouse for parts.) This means that as a company we stay up to date in systems far more than even some software development companies. Every year I get a bonus ... a good bonus ... handed to me near the first of every fiscal year based on a percentage of my work based on the companies work as a whole. That goes into my bank, and out to my creditors or to other companies from whom I am purchasing items. Yay places I shop, you get money from me, that came from a bonus from my company from monies they could not sit on. Every year every member of my company get an annual raise. Sometimes it's very small, and I might like for it to be a much higher raise, but it's annual. I know that next year my salary will increase, how hard I fight and work for my company will determine how close to the high end of the curve I am, but I know one is coming. Yay me, more income means more money to spend in the American community for companies at which I shop. Yay places I shop (a second time) My company just built a beautiful new building, to consolidate from three separate buildings we were leasing. Yay construction companies, contractors, HVAC system installation, wiring contractors, plumbers, drywallers, ceiling hangers, the glass place down the street that sold us all the windows. We were able to pay them all to build us something new and shiny, they get money to infuse back into the economy. Yay Carmel, IN .... you have just received a heck of a green blood transfusion. I didn't say we needed to become Socialist or Communists and all go live in communes and make the same amount of money as our neighbor no matter what line of work the government tells us we need to do. I said that Capitalism should be based around the rules that govern the Not For Profits that say that every dollar they earn, 75 cents needs to be spent on something to make the organization as a whole better. Whether that is new offices, new computers, or better paid employees, we can't put it in the bank, it has to go back into the economy. We are allowed to make Trillions this year, if we can, we just have to make sure those Trillions goes back out the door in some shape or fashion. That is the important difference. Speaking of For Profit companies using their money to invest, I've seen that too. I worked for a Level 2 Network Access Point .... one step removed from an Ameritech or Bell South or AT&T now, all Level 1's, that was owned by a single man/family. You know how he "invested" his profit back into the economy? No raise for two years, built a brand new state of the art data center, and cut every single corner he could find. Completely changed the dynamic of the business when the CLEC side started to fail, sold the CLEC side off to it's employees then watched it fold, then sold the Internet/NAP side off to a major data center company when it started to circle the drain ...... Oh yeah, he still has his private jet, several million in the bank, couple summer homes, etc. And all of that is fine, except two companies worth of employees are now down to barely nothing when the CLEC was the largest employer in the area, he paid himself *everything* because of course it was his company and he could, and now he's "infusing" his American money into Jamaica, mon. Do people have the right to make money? Yes. Do they have the right to make millions of personal money? Yes. Should they be allowed to game the system to bilk their employees and an entire area out of it's money and take it with them? No. Again, just my opinion.
