It's a tough call. In the 1950's, Japan and Europe was famous for cheap labor. A country trying to industrialize has to start somewhere.
The reason why Volkswagens were so cheap in the 1960's was cheap German labor. Now Volkswagen has to outsource to keep competitive. In the 1990's, It was South Korea that made things cheap. Now Hyundai is moving a lot of it's production to India because they are afraid that expensive South Korean labor will push them out of the marketplace. The early Toyotas were thought of as cheap, copy cat US cars made by low wage Japan. Toyota styled them after US cars so that they would sell here.
