I advise people to avoid running an smtp server if at all possible. One of
my lines of consulting is email deliver-ability for those 'free' newsletter
companies[where free means 'filled with advertisements']. There are so
many ways for you to accidentally get on a spamlist[for example, if you
just happen to be assigned an ip address used by a spammer 2 years ago] and
the whole process of dealing with it is so time intensive[not that it takes
a LOT of time, it just takes a long time. 5 minutes to fill out a
form...wait a few days...5 minutes to follow up...wait a few days, rinse
and repeat....] that I'd much rather give Google the headache.

Their entire app platform can is the same whether it is for Nonprofits, for
Education, for Business, or their free version. It's fairly simple to
setup and doesn't take too much time. The downside is the privacy issue,
but my own feeling is that sooo many people are already using gmail or
google apps - that it doesn't really matter. Your contact list can be
extrapolated by who is sending email to you and from you, and taking a
subset of their contact lists. Sure it's not exact, but the few names
that won't be on it don't matter that much.
