Here's an additional FYI. If you buy a closeout, refurb, or used PC it will not apply to you. But it might be of interest to someone else in the group. For a new PC to be Microsoft certified as Windows 8 capable, it must have a UEFI BIOS which includes the "Secure Boot" feature.Secure Boot prevents anything other than MS Windows from booting. It is intended to prevent malware (or so Microsoft says). It does this by checking for a Microsoft supplied signing key. The Linux distros are developing workarounds that will enable them to boot in the presence of Secure Boot. (The Fedora workaround is different from the Ubuntu workaround). So, at most, Secure Boot should amount to an inconvenience to the Linux user. _______________________________________________ Mid-Hudson Valley Linux Users Group http://mhvlug.org http://mhvlug.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mhvlug Upcoming Meetings (6pm - 8pm) Vassar College Nov 7 - Typography: Physical Art to Digital Art Dec 5 - Sysadmin Panel
