Although agetty or mgetty in the inittab are activating the ttyS1,
there must be a way to tell the pppd which port to listen to. In the
options-file above there is no option to tell this to the daemon.

Also I added dev/ttyS1 and 57600 for the speed as the first options in
the options-file to tell the daemon to look for that.
Is somewhere in your options-file the init-option involved and what
script is it executing?
Do you have a chat-drawer in etc/ppp?
