In actuality it is probably less dear to buy one once you arrive on the West
Coast. Typically the sales in the SF Bay Area will get you a quality level
TT or Garmin for USD 110 - 120, very often with lifetime maps and Traffic.
We have a Garmin 1490 that I got after my second TT 920 died in the UK
Morgan. It has been great, the first time out in 2006 it took us straight
to the Hotel Hermitage from Calais without a hitch. I had never been there
before in my life!

Ron, if you wind up in the SF area, give us a shout and we can get together.

Having driven Denver-Seattle-San Diego-Denver in 2010 I would thoroughly
recommend a sat-nav for the trip. It is cheaper to buy one and take it with
you than hire one from the car hire thieves companies.

Super in finding your way to pre-booked hotels and useful in that it had a
'which is the nearest hotel/motel' and 'nearest filling station' guide.

I had no trouble with a Tom Tom Go 930 but I have had a Garmin and they are
good, too.

Just extending the enquiry on sat nav devices a little, I'm planning a trip
to the West Coast USA later this year ( sadly not in the Mog). Any views on
whether a satnav is worth getting versus local maps; and if so whats the
current fave? i imagine that finding our way across great stretches of
desert isnt too taxing with a map, but I can foresee that LA might be!
